Sunset over the pier at Panama City Beach

The Emerald Coast Guide

Sunnyside, FL

Sunnyside is a small community on the bay side of Panama City Beach, known more to locals than to visitors. It's a quiet pocket of Northwest Florida life with a genuine community feel and easy access to both the bay and the Gulf.

3 places This weekend in Panama City Beach

Sunnyside is one of the little beach communities on the far west end of Panama City Beach, a name locals use and most visitors have never heard, which tells you a lot about its character. Tucked along the old beach highway near Laguna Beach, with Carillon Beach and the Walton County line just beyond, Sunnyside belongs to the quiet end of PCB: low-rise, unhurried, and a world away from the high-energy strip miles to the east.

The sand here is the same sugar-white quartz that made Panama City Beach famous, but the crowds thin dramatically on this end. Beach accesses serve modest neighborhoods of older cottages and newer rentals rather than towering condos, and summer evenings mean bike rides and beach chairs, not club lines. For families who found 30A’s fame (and prices) a bit much, Sunnyside and its neighboring west-end communities have long been the unofficial budget alternative next door.

Where Sunnyside sits

The location is quietly excellent. Drive a few minutes west and you reach Camp Helen State Park, where trails wrap around Lake Powell (one of the rare coastal dune lakes in the world, and among the largest) before the road crosses into Inlet Beach and the famous 30A corridor of Rosemary Beach and beyond. Head east instead and Pier Park, Panama City Beach’s main shopping and entertainment hub, is roughly 15 to 20 minutes away. Sunnyside splits the difference between two very different beach cultures.

Tips for a Sunnyside stay

Come for calm, not amenities: this is a residential beach pocket, so plan grocery runs toward PCB proper and expect quiet nights. Visit Camp Helen early in the day for parking and cooler trail miles, and put a paddleboard on Lake Powell at least once. Dune-lake water is unlike anything else on this coast. If you want 30A’s beauty without 30A’s bill, sleeping in Sunnyside and day-tripping west is one of the smartest plays on the whole Emerald Coast.

Experiences & Recreation in Sunnyside

The west end’s headline is Camp Helen State Park, minutes from Sunnyside, where trails ring Lake Powell (one of the world’s rare coastal dune lakes) between pine woods and the Gulf. Add uncrowded beach accesses, paddleboarding on lake or sea, and quick hops to 30A’s bike paths, and this quiet corner earns its keep. We’ll collect activities and outfitters here as listings are added.

Stays in Sunnyside

Staying in Sunnyside means beach cottages, low-rise rentals, and quiet streets on Panama City Beach’s uncrowded west end, with the same white sand as the main strip at a calmer pace and often a friendlier price. It suits families, couples, and anyone day-tripping to 30A without paying 30A rates. We’ll gather the area’s vacation rentals and lodging options here as listings come online.
