About

The Pensacola Saenger Theatre is a restored 1925 performance hall on Palafox Street and the downtown home for touring Broadway productions, concerts, comedy and the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. Owned by the City of Pensacola and operated by Legends Global, the theater seats about 1,641 people and marked its 100th anniversary in 2025.

The Saenger opened on April 2, 1925. It was designed by architect Emile Weil in a Spanish Baroque style, and its builders reused materials salvaged from the Pensacola Opera House, which had been damaged in a 1916 hurricane. A 70-foot steel girder supporting the balcony was described at the time as the largest used in a Florida construction project up to 1925. Like many Southern theaters of the era, its original design included a segregated entrance and seating for Black patrons.

Declining attendance led the theater to close in 1975. The following year ABC Southeastern Theatres donated it to the city, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in July 1976. A restoration of about $1.6 million brought it back in March 1981, when the Duke Ellington Orchestra played the reopening. A second, much larger renovation from 2007 to 2009 modernized the stage and backstage areas, and the theater reopened in March 2009. Its original 1925 Robert Morton pipe organ was expanded and restored in 2014.

Shows and parking

The calendar mixes the Broadway in Pensacola series with symphony nights, touring musicians and comedians. Tickets are sold through the theater’s website. Even for those not attending a show, the ornate facade is one of the landmark sights on Palafox.

The building’s story reflects that of downtown itself. When suburban growth and changing movie habits pulled audiences away in the 1970s, the theater went dark, and it took city ownership and two major restoration efforts to bring it back. Today it is one of the anchors of the downtown arts scene. Inside, the restored auditorium keeps its Spanish Baroque detailing, and the 1925 Robert Morton organ remains part of the original fabric that visitors can still see and hear.

The Saenger has no adjacent parking lot. The theater recommends the Jefferson Street Parking Garage or the Intendencia Street Parking Garage, both a short walk away. Arriving early leaves time for dinner on Palafox Street, where many restaurants are within a block or two, and Plaza Ferdinand VII is just south. Box office hours and show times vary by event, so check hours before you go.
