Grayton Beach

Grayton Beach is the oldest community on 30A and easily its most bohemian — a funky grid of sandy streets, weathered cottages, and live oaks draped in Spanish moss, settled in the 1890s and fiercely protective of its unpolished character ever since. The unofficial town motto, “Nice Dogs, Strange People,” tells you most of what you need to know. While its neighbors grew into manicured planned communities, Grayton stayed gloriously itself: barefoot, artistic, and a little eccentric.

The setting is remarkable even by 30A standards. Grayton sits roughly midway along the corridor, between Blue Mountain Beach to the west and WaterColor and Seaside to the east, bordered by Grayton Beach State Park — nearly 2,000 acres of dunes, pine flatwoods, and a shoreline routinely ranked among America’s most beautiful beaches. Western Lake, the most photographed of South Walton’s rare coastal dune lakes, winds through the park and meets the Gulf in a shifting outfall that’s a paradise for paddleboarders and kids alike. The park also offers camping, cabins, and hiking trails, plus the underwater sculptures of the Underwater Museum of Art a mile offshore.

Eat, Drink, and Wander

Grayton’s food scene is legendary for a town this size. The Red Bar, its jazz-filled landmark, is one of the most famous restaurants in Florida’s panhandle; Chiringo serves beachside coastal fare steps from the sand; Hurricane Oyster Bar shucks cold Gulf oysters under a ceiling of dollar bills; and Roux 30A holds a Michelin recommendation for its intimate tasting menu. Black Bear Bread Co. anchors mornings, and the galleries — The Zoo Gallery, trading in handcrafted art since 1979, among them — reward an afternoon wander through the Shops of Grayton.

Practical Tips

Public parking near the beach at the end of Hwy 283 is limited and fills early in summer — biking in on the Timpoochee Trail or parking at Grayton Beach State Park (day-use fee, ample lots) is often smarter. Grayton is famously dog-friendly, and it’s one of the few beaches in Florida where permitted locals can still drive on the sand, a tradition dating back generations. Spring and fall are ideal; summer evenings at The Red Bar are worth the wait regardless of season.
