Back Beach Road Corridor

Back Beach Road is what locals call US-98 — signed as Panama City Beach Parkway — the four-to-six-lane road that runs the full length of Panama City Beach parallel to the Gulf, a mile or so inland from the sand. Where Front Beach Road is the show, Back Beach is the workhorse: it is how locals actually get around, and how smart visitors do too.

What clusters along it is everyday Panama City Beach. This is where you will find the grocery stores, the locally owned restaurants that do not need a Gulf view to fill seats, and the shops and service businesses that keep a beach town running. Frank Brown Park, PCB’s big recreation complex of ballfields and event grounds, fronts the parkway, and Aaron Bessant Park with its amphitheater sits just off it behind Pier Park. Out toward the western end, the road ties into Highway 79 — the main route in from Interstate 10 — which means most visitors’ first look at PCB is actually Back Beach Road, not the beach.

Using Back Beach Road to beat the traffic

Here is the tip every local gives: in summer, never use Front Beach Road to cover distance. Take Back Beach Road instead, then drop south on the cross street nearest your destination — Highway 79 at Pier Park, Richard Jackson Boulevard, or the Thomas Drive split at the east end. On a busy July evening the parkway can save you thirty minutes or more over the beachfront crawl, and it is the sensible route to the Hathaway Bridge whenever you are headed into Panama City proper.

You will probably end up on Back Beach Road without planning to — arriving from I-10, making a grocery run, or escaping strip traffic. When you do, it rewards a closer look: some of the area’s best casual eating hides in its plazas, and waterfront spots like Boondocks sit just up the road toward West Bay. It is not the pretty road, but it is the useful one, and knowing it is half of driving PCB like a local.
