Emerald Coast Parkway is the road every Destin visitor gets to know, whether they mean to or not. It is the local name for US Highway 98 as it runs through Destin — the main artery that starts at the Marler Bridge by Destin Harbor and carries you east past the shopping centers, restaurants, and attractions toward Miramar Beach and the rest of the coast. If you are staying anywhere in Destin, nearly every drive you take will touch this corridor.

What lines the parkway

The corridor is where Destin’s big attractions and everyday conveniences cluster side by side. Big Kahuna’s Water & Adventure Park, the area’s landmark water park, sits right on the parkway and is impossible to miss. Henderson Beach State Park — 6,000 feet of preserved sugar-white shoreline and one of the best natural beaches in Destin — has its entrance directly off Emerald Coast Parkway, a reminder that wild Florida still holds ground along this commercial strip. Dining ranges from morning stops like Cafe Destin to full-on beachfront seafood at The Crab Trap, which sits where Scenic Highway 98 meets the sand near James Lee Park.

That mention of Scenic Highway 98 matters: east of Henderson Beach, the old beach road splits off from the main parkway and hugs the Gulf through Crystal Beach toward Miramar Beach. When you want the water-view drive instead of the fast one, Scenic 98 is the route to take — it rejoins the main highway further east, so you lose little time and gain a lot of scenery.

Honest local advice: Emerald Coast Parkway is slow in summer. Saturdays are the worst, when weekly rentals turn over and the bridge backs up in both directions. Build in extra time for anything scheduled, use Commons Drive as a parallel bypass through mid-Destin, and run errands in the morning before beach traffic peaks. Most shopping centers along the corridor have large free lots, so parking is rarely the problem — getting there is.

Treat the parkway as your spine for the whole trip: attractions, groceries, restaurants, and the state park are all threaded along it, and once you learn its rhythms, the rest of Destin falls into place.
