Valparaiso, Florida — locals just say “Val-P” — is Niceville’s smaller twin across Boggy Bayou, a bayside city of quiet streets, big water views, and deep Air Force roots. Eglin Air Force Base wraps around the town, and generations of military families have called it home, which gives Valparaiso a character all its own: unpolished, friendly, and more interesting than its size suggests.

Getting oriented

Valparaiso sits in Okaloosa County on the north side of Choctawhatchee Bay, laced with bayous — Boggy Bayou on one side, Tom’s Bayou on the other. Destin is about 25 minutes away via the Mid-Bay Bridge, and Fort Walton Beach is roughly half an hour around the bay. Like Niceville next door, it works well as a cheaper, calmer base for a beach trip, especially for anyone visiting family stationed at Eglin.

What’s worth doing in Valparaiso

Start with the Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida, which has been preserving Panhandle history since 1971 — pioneer artifacts, local archives, and one of the best genealogy resources in the region. It’s the kind of small museum that rewards an unhurried hour. For something hands-on, A Ceramic Studio & Hobby Shop offers paint-your-own-pottery that’s a reliable hit with kids on a non-beach day.

The waterfront dining is the sleeper draw. The Boathouse Landing serves seafood and American fare right on Boggy Bayou, and Doc’s Oyster Bar shucks New Orleans-style oysters and builds po’boys on Tom’s Bayou — two genuinely scenic water-view meals without Destin’s wait times or prices. If you’d rather cook, Willingham Seafood Company sells fresh catch straight off the boat at its waterfront market.

Valparaiso’s shops tell the town’s story better than any brochure: Discovery Dive World is a veteran-owned dive shop and training center, Bombs Away Inc. deals in EOD memorabilia — a nod to Eglin’s explosive ordnance disposal community — and the Philippine Market and Cafe serves a Filipino lunch buffet that reflects the international families the base has brought here for decades. Music Mart, the hometown music store, rounds out a downtown that’s small, genuine, and worth a wander.
