Emerald Coast Guide
30A
Thirty miles of quiet, unspoiled coastline — 30A is one of the most beloved stretches of beach in the country, and for good reason. Charming communities, exceptional restaurants, independent boutiques, and a creative culture that thrives in the dunes. Whether you're a first-timer or a decades-long regular, there's always something new to find here.

Scenic Highway 30A is a two-lane coastal road in South Walton, Florida, threading together more than a dozen beach neighborhoods between Destin and Panama City Beach. When people say “30A Florida,” they mean this whole corridor — Dune Allen Beach and Santa Rosa Beach anchoring the western end, Blue Mountain Beach, Grayton Beach, WaterColor, and Seaside in the middle, and Seagrove, WaterSound, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach, and Inlet Beach stretching east. Each community has its own personality, but they all share the same sugar-white quartz sand, clear emerald water, and a deliberately low-rise character — no high-rise towers, no boardwalk arcades — that sets 30A apart from the bigger resort cities on either side.
The geography here is genuinely rare. A chain of coastal dune lakes — Western Lake, Eastern Lake, Oyster Lake, Draper Lake, and others — sits just behind the dunes, a phenomenon found in only a handful of places on Earth. Large stretches of the corridor are protected public land, including Grayton Beach State Park, Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, Deer Lake State Park, and the sprawling Point Washington State Forest just inland, which is why so much of 30A still looks like Old Florida.
Things to Do on 30A
The beach comes first, but the list of things to do on 30A runs deep. Bike the Timpoochee Trail, the paved path that parallels nearly the entire highway and is the easiest way to hop between towns without touching a parking lot. Paddle Western Lake with Boathouse Paddle Club, book a horseback ride with Western Pleasure Riding Stables & Carriages, or head out on Choctawhatchee Bay with a fishing charter. In Seaside, browse Sundog Books, catch a free show at the Seaside Amphitheater, and graze your way down Airstream Row. Dinner options range from toes-in-the-sand seafood shacks to white-tablecloth institutions like Café Thirty-A.
Practical Tips
Public beach access is easiest at the regional accesses — Ed Walline at Gulf Place, Blue Mountain Beach, Grayton Beach State Park, and others — which offer the most parking, but lots fill by mid-morning from Memorial Day through early August. Spring and fall are the sweet spots: warm Gulf water, thinner crowds, and easier restaurant reservations. Summer is peak family season, and winter stays mild and wonderfully quiet. Whenever you come, book accommodations early — the best cottages, inns, and hotels on 30A sell out months ahead for peak weeks.
Arts & Culture in 30A
For a beach road, 30A punches well above its weight culturally. Catch a free concert on the lawn at the Seaside Amphitheater, browse contemporary American art at Newbill Collection by the Sea, or pick up a coastal needlepoint project at Emerald Stitchery in Seagrove. From galleries to outdoor performances, the arts scene here reflects the corridor’s long history as a haven for artists, writers, and musicians.

Experiences & Recreation in 30A
Beyond the beach, the best things to do on 30A get you onto the water and into the landscape. Paddle a rare coastal dune lake with Boathouse Paddle Club on Western Lake, have a board delivered by Stay Afloat Paddle Board Co., or ride horseback through the pines with Western Pleasure Riding Stables & Carriages. Add a guided trip with Choctawhatchee Bay Fishing Charters and you’ve covered Gulf, lake, forest, and bay in one vacation.
