Frost Bites
About
Frost Bites has been slinging Hawaiian shave ice, frozen custard, and fresh lemonade from Airstream Row since 1994, and it holds a special distinction on 30A: it was the first Airstream to park on what is now known as Airstream Row. Long before food trucks became a fixture of Emerald Coast vacations, Frost Bites set up shop in a vintage Airstream camper shell along East County Highway 30A in Seaside, serving cold treats through a walk-up window to beachgoers looking to cool off.
Visit South Walton calls Frost Bites “a Seaside icon and original,” and three decades of loyal customers would agree. Families who first stopped by as kids now bring their own children back to the same shaded spot, ordering the same rainbow-colored shave ice piled high in a paper cup. The stand built its reputation on simplicity: real shaved ice, not the crushed variety, soaked in tropical syrups that channel the aloha spirit its name promises in every bite.

In the spring of 2024, Frost Bites underwent its biggest transformation yet, trading its original 1955 Airstream shell for a fully restored 1964 model. Tim Heinz of Heinz Design Vintage Trailers and RVs handled the renovation, preserving the retro curves and polished aluminum skin that make Airstream Row instantly recognizable while updating the equipment inside. The swap kept the same window, the same menu, and the same spot on 30A, just with a shinier trailer wrapped around it.
The menu itself stays true to its Hawaiian shave ice roots: finely shaved ice soaked in housemade syrups, layered into flavor combinations that regulars have turned into personal favorites over the years. Alongside the shave ice, Frost Bites serves frozen custard for a creamier option and fresh lemonade for a simpler way to beat the Florida heat. It is a lineup built for a beach day, quick to order and quick to enjoy before heading back to the sand. The stand also sells its own branded merchandise for visitors who want to take a piece of Airstream Row history home.

Frost Bites keeps daily hours from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., long enough to catch both the midday heat and the evening stroll crowd wandering Airstream Row after dinner. Its spot at 2215 East County Highway 30A puts it steps from Crepes du Soleil, Wild Bill’s Beach Dogs, Mr. Gyro Hero, and Wild Nectar 30A, making the row a natural grazing route for visitors staying in Seaside. Even with newer arrivals crowding in around it, Frost Bites remains the anchor that started it all, selling shave ice, custard, and lemonade under the trees since 1994.
Seaside itself gives Frost Bites an unusually storied backdrop. The town was built starting in 1981 by developer Robert Davis on land his family had held since the 1940s, designed with architects Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk as one of the country’s first New Urbanist communities, with narrow walkable streets and front porches meant for running into neighbors. Seaside later became internationally recognizable as the filming location for the 1998 movie The Truman Show, and Airstream Row, tucked along East County Highway 30A, grew up alongside that reputation as the town’s answer to a beachside food court.
For visitors walking that row today, Frost Bites is usually the first stop and often the last, since a shave ice or a scoop of frozen custard works just as well as a mid-afternoon cooldown as it does a walk-back-to-the-cottage dessert. The shaded seating near the trailer gives families a place to regroup after the beach, and the trailer’s long run under the same ownership means the flavor combinations, and the friendly service behind the window, have stayed consistent even as the surrounding row has filled in with new neighbors over the past thirty years.
