Big Kahuna’s Water & Adventure Park

Big Kahuna’s Water & Adventure Park has anchored the north side of Highway 98 in Destin since 1986, and today it holds the title of the largest water park on the Emerald Coast. What began as a single water park has grown into a sprawling entertainment complex with more than 40 attractions split across a water park and an adjoining adventure park. The original owners ran the property for nearly three decades before selling it in 2014 to Apex Parks Group, which later restructured its portfolio of parks under the Boomers Parks name. Big Kahuna’s now shares that family with sister water parks such as Shipwreck Island in Panama City Beach, though it keeps its own tiki and tropical identity that has defined this stretch of the Destin skyline for generations of vacationing families.

The water park side rewards a full day of exploring. Thrill seekers gravitate toward named slides like the Kowabunga Racer, where friends race side by side on mat slides, and Jumanji, a five story drop that launches riders from one of the tallest towers on the property. Twisting rides such as the Cobra Twister and Maui Pipeline send tubes spinning through enclosed curves, while the Honolulu Half Pipe lets confident guests try body boarding on a wave simulator built into a half pipe wall. Families with younger children tend to settle into Buccaneer Cove, Tadpole Pond, and Crocodile Flats, three shallow play zones scaled for toddlers and grade schoolers, or drift together along the Lazy River and the additional Humunga and Thunder Rivers that wind through the property’s palm shaded landscaping. The wave pool remains one of the park’s central gathering points, cycling through calm stretches and rolling swells throughout the day, and Bombs Away Bay offers a quieter cove for guests who want to float without the current of a river ride.

Cross over to the other side of the property and it shifts into Adventure Park territory. The signature ride here is the Skycoaster, a swing style thrill ride that hoists riders 100 feet into the air before releasing them into a free fall that reaches speeds near 60 miles per hour. Riders must be at least 42 inches tall, and the combined weight of a group is capped at 800 pounds. Just below it sprawls Tropical Mini Golf, 54 holes spread across three separate 18 hole courses landscaped with waterfalls, wooden bridges, carved tiki heads, and a centerpiece pirate ship that towers over the greens. The terrain climbs and drops through the layout, so guests should expect stairs rather than flat, easily navigable paths. After a round, BK’s 19th Hole gives adults a shaded spot to grab a drink while kids finish out the course.

Because Big Kahuna’s operates on a cashless system, it’s worth loading a card or the park’s app before arrival rather than carrying cash to the gate. Outside coolers, food, and drinks aren’t permitted inside, but cabanas can be rented for shade and storage during a long pool day, and the park regularly hosts birthday parties and group outings for anyone planning ahead. Hours run daily, though start and close times shift with the season, so it pays to check ahead rather than assume standard summer hours apply on a spring or fall visit. Because the park sits directly on Highway 98 in the heart of Destin’s Emerald Coast Parkway corridor, it works well paired with a beach morning and a water park afternoon, or as a backup plan on a day when Gulf swimming isn’t ideal. Reserving parking online ahead of time can shave a few minutes off the walk from the lot during the park’s busiest stretch in June and July, and arriving close to opening gives families first crack at the more popular slides before the lines lengthen into early afternoon.
