About

Sharky’s Beachfront Restaurant & Tiki Bar has anchored the sand at 15201 Front Beach Rd in Panama City Beach since 1986, serving Gulf seafood under a palapa that the restaurant bills as the largest open-air tiki hut in the country. Visitors reach the dining deck straight off the beach, and the thatched roof overhead sets a tone that feels more South Pacific than Panhandle, even though the kitchen sends out distinctly Gulf Coast plates. The restaurant sits in the Front Beach Road corridor, one of the busiest stretches of the beach, and it draws a steady mix of families, spring breakers, and longtime regulars who treat it as a seasonal ritual.

The business traces back to Clark Bennett, a Panama City Beach native who grew up working as a lifeguard on this same stretch of sand and later graduated from Florida State University. Bennett left a career in banking to build the restaurant he had pictured since his lifeguarding days, and what he opened covered only the footprint that today houses the oyster bar. Decades of additions turned that small start into more than 15,000 square feet of deck and dining space. Bennett passed away unexpectedly in 2007, and his family, together with a staff that now numbers more than 100, has kept the restaurant running on the vision he set out with.

The palapa itself is the restaurant’s signature feature. Builders used more than 100,000 cabbage palm fronds along with cypress poles and knees to raise the structure, and it has stood through three Category 4 hurricanes, one Category 5 hurricane, and numerous tropical storms without serious damage, a track record the restaurant points to as proof of how the roof was engineered. Sitting underneath it at sunset, with the fronds rustling overhead and the Gulf a few steps away, remains one of the more memorable ways to end a beach day in Panama City Beach.

Gulf seafood drives the menu, and the kitchen turns out fish tacos, raw and chargrilled oysters, Caribbean nachos, and snow crab legs alongside steaks, sandwiches, and fresh salads for guests who want something lighter. A full bar handles the specialty drink side of the operation, and a dedicated kids menu, including fried chicken strips, keeps the restaurant workable for families traveling with young children. That family focus extends outside the dining room to the Pirate Ship Playground, a beachfront play structure where kids can burn off energy while parents finish a meal or a drink without having to leave the property.

Live music fills the tiki hut most nights, continuing a tradition that once included concerts from national touring acts such as Rick Springfield, The Fixx, Meat Loaf, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, and Kansas. On any given evening now, the entertainment leans toward regional bands and solo acoustic acts suited to a beach crowd, but the stage still gets consistent use, and the restaurant times sets to coincide with sunset for maximum effect. Sports fans have options too, since the bar carries a full lineup of MLB, NCAA, and NFL football, plus basketball, on screens scattered around the tiki hut and dining areas.

Sharky’s also plays host to several of Panama City Beach’s signature annual events, including Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rally, Gulf Coast Jam, and Emerald Coast Cruizin’, which brings its own bump in crowds and energy to the property. A gift shop lets visitors take home a souvenir, and onsite beach photographers offer another way to document a trip. Regular Kids Eat Free promotions run in partnership with area hotels, giving families another reason to make Sharky’s part of a beach week routine rather than a one-time stop. The restaurant keeps regular hours through the week, staying open Monday through Wednesday from 11 AM to 10:30 PM and Thursday through Sunday from 11 AM to 11 PM, so there is room to plan around a full beach day and still catch dinner and live music afterward. For questions or reservations for larger groups, the restaurant can be reached at 850-235-2420, and current event listings and menu details are posted at sharkysbeach.com.
