Ask ten locals the best time to visit and at least eight will say fall. The water is still warm, the crowds have gone home, and every weekend seems to have a seafood festival. But “best” depends on what you want: swimmable water, quiet beaches, lower rates or a packed calendar. Here is how the year actually plays out, from Pensacola to Panama City Beach.

Remember the water lags the air by about a month. Late May air can feel like summer while the Gulf is still in the upper 70s, and October water often feels warmer than the air on a breezy evening.
Hurricane season, honestly
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. According to NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, activity peaks around September 10, with most storms between mid-August and mid-October. That overlaps with our favorite time of year, which is why locals plan fall trips with a little flexibility.
Most summers and falls pass without a direct hit, but it is smart to:
- Book refundable or flexible lodging, or consider travel insurance, for August through October trips.
- Watch the National Hurricane Center’s outlook in the week before you travel.
- Follow county emergency alerts and your rental company’s instructions if a storm threatens.

Month by month
January
Cool, quiet and sometimes gorgeous. Highs in the low 60s, water in the mid 50s. This is peak snowbird season, when winter residents from the Midwest and Canada fill long-term rentals, and restaurants that stay open cater to locals. February
Similar to January with a hint of spring late in the month. Mardi Gras parades roll in Pensacola and other Gulf towns. Some Pensacola Beach lifeguard towers begin reopening at the end of the month. Rates stay low, and the beaches are wide open for long walks.
March
Spring break arrives, and it is not the same everywhere. Panama City Beach sees the biggest crowds, and the city prohibits alcohol on the sandy beach for the entire month of March. Destin and 30A skew toward families on school spring breaks, which stretch from early March into April. Lifeguards return to the regional beach accesses in South Walton and to Okaloosa County beaches on March 1. The water is still chilly (low 60s), so most swimming happens in heated pools.
April
One of the best-kept secrets on the coast. Highs in the upper 70s, water climbing into the low 70s, azaleas blooming inland and crowds between spring break waves. Bands on the Beach, Pensacola Beach’s free Tuesday night concert series at the Gulfside Pavilion, starts in April and runs through October.
May
Near-perfect beach weather before the summer rush. Water reaches the upper 70s, humidity is lower than it will be in a month, and May is typically one of the drier months. Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer season, and the free Pensacola Beach trolley starts running for the summer.
June
Summer arrives in full. Highs around 90, Gulf water in the mid 80s, and hurricane season officially begins June 1. Expect afternoon thunderstorms that blow through in an hour. Go to the beach early, retreat midday, and come back for sunset.
July
The busiest month. Fourth of July weekend brings fireworks and the heaviest traffic of the year. Book restaurants ahead, arrive at beach accesses early, and avoid US-98 on Saturday afternoons. Our getting to the Emerald Coast guide has traffic tips.
August
Water is at its warmest (mid 80s) and crowds thin noticeably once schools go back in early to mid August. Rates start to soften. It is still hot, humid and stormy in the afternoons, and tropical activity starts to pick up late in the month.
September
The shoulder season begins. After Labor Day, rental rates drop and beaches empty out on weekdays, while the water stays in the low 80s. Late September is festival season: the Destin Seafood Festival at HarborWalk Village, the Pensacola Seafood Festival in Seville Square and Pensacola Oktoberfest often land around the same time. This is peak hurricane season, so keep plans flexible.
October
If you can only pick one month, pick this one. Highs around 80, lows in the low 60s, swimmable water into mid-month and a packed calendar:
- The Destin Fishing Rodeo runs all month on Destin Harbor.
- The Harvest Wine & Food Festival in WaterColor and the 30A Blue Crab Festival bring food weekends to 30A.
- The Panama City Beach Seafood Festival sets up at Grand Lagoon.
- Destin has the Festival of the Arts at the MKAF Cultural Arts Village and the Destin Songwriter Festival on the harbor boardwalk.
- Rosemary Beach hosts SOWAL Jazz Fest, and Pensacola’s citywide Foo Foo Festival of the arts begins late in the month.
November
Crisp mornings, highs in the low 70s and blue-sky beach walks, though the Gulf drops to the mid 60s. November is packed with events:
- The Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show at NAS Pensacola.
- The Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival, the Pensacola Greek Festival and the Pensacola Marathon in Pensacola.
- IRONMAN Florida in Panama City Beach.
- On 30A, the Seeing Red Wine Festival in Seaside, the Flutterby Arts Festival in WaterSound, Rosemary Beach Uncorked and the 30A 10K Thanksgiving Day Races.
Hurricane season ends November 30.
December
Quiet beaches, holiday lights and low rates. Pensacola Winterfest runs downtown from late November through Christmas Eve. The Destin Harbor Lighted Boat Parade lights up the harbor, and Panama City Beach rings in the new year with the New Year’s Eve Beach Ball Drop at Pier Park. Snowbirds start arriving for the winter.
So, when should you go?
- For swimming and classic summer beach days: June through August, if you do not mind crowds and heat. Late May and September are the sweet spots on either side.
- For the best overall weather and fewer people: late September through October.
- For value and quiet: November through February. Pack a jacket.
- For festivals: October and November.
- For families on a spring break schedule: late March or April on 30A or Destin, where the crowds are gentler than Panama City Beach.
