Carmen’s Lunch Bar & Tapas

Pensacola · Palafox District

About

Carmen’s Lunch Bar & Tapas is a small daytime restaurant on South Palafox Street serving Southern and international food with European, Spanish and South American influences. The space is just 739 square feet, with seats at the bar and a few by the window, and the scale is part of the charm: the kitchen and the counter are close enough that conversation between staff and guests is part of the meal.

Owner MariCarmen Josephs is a Pensacola native who studied in Spain and earned degrees in Spanish and journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her cooking draws on her mother, Julie DeMarko, a longtime caterer, restaurateur and chef, and on travels in Spain with her father, Allen Josephs, a retired University of West Florida language instructor. She opened Carmen’s in October 2012 after winning the Pensacola Business Challenge, a competition that provided startup funding and rent support for a new downtown business. In 2017, flooding from a utility project forced a full renovation, and community support helped the restaurant reopen quickly.

The menu mixes soups, fresh salads, tapas, sandwiches and daily specials. Dishes that regulars point to include the Spanish Crab Melt, an open-face sandwich of jumbo lump crab with Spanish chorizo, Manchego, lemon and saffron; Spanish crab pepper poppers; a savory goat cheese cheesecake; and a Thai yellow curry crab chowder. House-made soda bread is another signature. The drinks list focuses on boutique wines and imported beers. Gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options are available.

The restaurant has a strong local following. According to reporting on the business, roughly 60 percent of its customers are locals, and the owner has described the compact room as a place built around connection between staff and guests. For visitors, that makes it a good way to see a slice of everyday Palafox life. Daily specials change, so it is worth asking what is new before ordering, and the boutique wine list offers a glass to go with a plate of tapas.

Carmen’s is a lunch spot, not a dinner destination. The Downtown Improvement Board lists hours of 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and the restaurant is closed Sunday. With so few seats, arriving before the noon rush helps. Check hours before you go, since a small kitchen can close for holidays or private events.

The restaurant is at the corner of Palafox and Main streets in the same historic building as Bodacious Shops, a few steps from the waterfront and a short walk from Plaza Ferdinand VII and the Pensacola Museum of Art. It makes a good midday break during a downtown walking tour or after a Saturday morning at Palafox Market.
