Circle Drive Historic District, FL

The Circle Drive Historic District is one of the most unexpected sights in the Florida Panhandle: a ring of Victorian homes and historic buildings wrapped around Lake DeFuniak, a spring-fed lake so nearly perfectly round that it is often cited as one of only a couple of naturally circular lakes in the world. This is the historic heart of DeFuniak Springs, and there is nothing else like it anywhere on the Emerald Coast.

A Victorian time capsule

The district dates to the 1880s, when DeFuniak Springs became the winter home of the Chautauqua movement, a traveling education-and-culture assembly that drew thousands to the lakeshore each season. The Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood, the movement’s grand lakefront auditorium, still presides over the water and remains the district’s signature landmark. Around the lake, the Victorian-era cottages and homes built for Chautauqua visitors survive in remarkable numbers, making Circle Drive a genuine open-air museum of 19th-century Florida. The Walton County Heritage Museum fills in the story, covering the railroad-town history that built DeFuniak Springs and the county around it.

How to visit

The best way to experience the district is on foot: the loop around Lake DeFuniak is roughly a mile of flat, easy walking with the lake on one side and Victorian architecture on the other the entire way. Park free along Circle Drive or near the historic downtown blocks just off the loop, then take it slow: this is a stroll-and-gawk district, not a checklist. The museum and the Hall of Brotherhood anchor the cultural stops, and the adjacent downtown adds shops and cafes for before or after.

DeFuniak Springs sits on US-90 just north of Interstate 10, about 45 minutes inland from the beaches of South Walton and Destin. That makes Circle Drive an ideal half-day trip when you want a break from the sand, and one of the region’s best rainy-day and shoulder-season outings, since the district’s charm does not depend on beach weather.
