About

Big Lagoon State Park protects about 705 acres on the Intracoastal Waterway west of Pensacola, directly across the water from Perdido Key. It is a quieter alternative to the Gulf beaches nearby: the shoreline faces Big Lagoon rather than open surf, the water is usually calm, and boardwalks thread through salt marsh, pine flatwoods and small freshwater ponds. It is best known for its observation tower at East Beach, which looks out over Big Lagoon, Perdido Key and the Gulf beyond.

What to do

  • Climb the tower: a boardwalk from the East Beach picnic area leads to the observation tower, the best view in the park at sunrise or sunset.
  • Walk the boardwalks and trails: about 5 miles of trails and boardwalks cross the park, with overlooks at Long Pond and Grand Lagoon. A 2.5-mile paved park drive is popular with cyclists.
  • Paddle: a hand launch and self-service kayak rentals make it easy to get on the lagoon, and the park is a gateway to the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail. A two-lane boat ramp serves powerboats.
  • Swim and picnic: the beaches along the lagoon are shallow and calm, with no lifeguards on duty. There are 15 family pavilions, playgrounds and free beach wheelchairs.
  • Look for wildlife: the park is a gateway site on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Look for wood-warblers in spring and fall, wading birds and ducks in winter, and deer and gopher tortoises year-round. Alligators live in Long Pond.
