Sunbird Beach Resort

Sunbird Beach Resort is a Gulf-front condominium complex at 9850 South Thomas Drive, where Thomas Drive meets the beach near the center of Panama City Beach. Built in 1984, it has two 12-story towers, East and West, set on about 500 feet of beachfront, and it has long been a favorite for weekly and monthly stays. The well-known Pineapple Willy’s restaurant is right next door.

The complex has about 288 condos, mostly one- and two-bedroom plans of roughly 600 to 1,000 square feet, with a small number of larger units. Unit numbers include an E or W to show the tower. Units have kitchens and balconies, and many face the Gulf directly.

The landscaped pool deck between the towers has a tropical feel, with three Gulf-side pools, one of them heated. Tennis courts, pickleball, shuffleboard, a fitness center and a clubhouse round out the amenities, and the property has gated parking and 24-hour security. The beach is directly behind the pool deck. The building’s HOA covers maintenance and grounds, and the long beachfront gives families room to spread out even in busy weeks.

Being at the Thomas Drive junction puts Sunbird between the central strip and the quieter east end. The M.B. Miller County Pier and Rick Seltzer Park are about five minutes away, Shores of Panama and Laketown Wharf are neighbors, and St. Andrews State Park is roughly 11 minutes east. Front Beach Road attractions and Shipwreck Island Waterpark are a short drive west.

Units at Sunbird are individually owned and rented through their owners and several rental companies, so furnishings, bed layouts, parking rules and extras such as seasonal beach chair service vary from one unit to the next. The heated pool, racquet courts and walkable dining make it a comfortable choice for families, snowbirds and value-focused travelers.
