Laurel Hill sits about 20 minutes north of Crestview on SR-85, in the red-clay hill country that rolls toward Alabama. It’s reason enough to detour off SR-85 around lunchtime.
The surrounding geography rewards wandering, too. A short drive east across the Walton County line sits Britton Hill, the highest natural point in Florida at 345 feet — famously the lowest state high point in America, and a fun, low-effort badge for peak-baggers. West of town, the backroads run toward the longleaf pine expanse of Blackwater River State Forest country. Together they make Laurel Hill a natural leg of a North Okaloosa day loop: Crestview to Baker’s Block Museum to Laurel Hill for a cheesesteak, home by dark.
Practical notes: services are minimal, so fuel up in Crestview, and expect farm equipment on the roads. Cell coverage can thin out on the backroads. What you get in exchange is quiet — real quiet — and a friendly, unhurried corner of Florida most Emerald Coast visitors never know exists.
