The Old Spanish Trail Area follows US Highway 90 through the heart of Crestview, the original main street of north Okaloosa County’s biggest city. The name is no marketing invention: US-90 traces the route of the Old Spanish Trail, the 1920s auto highway that once linked St. Augustine, Florida to San Diego, California, and Crestview grew up along it. Today the corridor holds the city’s historic core, with longtime local businesses, civic buildings, and community institutions that give Crestview a character all its own.

The heart of old Crestview

This is where Crestview feels most like itself. The downtown blocks around Main Street and US-90 are walkable in a way the newer commercial strips are not, and the corridor’s anchor for visitors is the Crestview Farmers Market at Spanish Trail Park, a year-round, open-air Saturday market where local growers and makers set up rain or shine. If you want to see north-county life at its friendliest, a Saturday morning at the market is the move: local produce, handmade goods, and conversation that does not run on a tourist clock.

When you’ll pass through

Crestview sits at the crossroads of Interstate 10 and Highway 85, which makes it the gateway most inland travelers use to reach the beaches of Fort Walton Beach, Okaloosa Island, and Destin. If you are driving I-10 across the Panhandle (or heading to the coast from Alabama and points north), the Old Spanish Trail corridor is minutes off the interstate and a far better leg-stretch stop than any exit-ramp cluster. Parking is free and easy along the downtown blocks, and traffic is gentle compared with anything on the coastal highways.

It is also simply a different side of the Emerald Coast story. The beach towns get the attention, but towns like Crestview show the older, slower Panhandle that existed before the condos: brick storefronts, a courthouse square rhythm, and a Saturday market in the park. Pair a market morning with breakfast near Bob Sikes Airport on the north side of town and you have a genuinely local Crestview outing before rolling south to the sand.

Shops in Old Spanish Trail Area

Shopping along the Old Spanish Trail corridor means local and independent, and the standout is the Crestview Farmers Market at Spanish Trail Park, a year-round, open-air Saturday market featuring local produce, baked goods, and handmade items. It is the best single stop for a taste of north Okaloosa County’s homegrown side, and the surrounding downtown blocks reward a browse afterward.
