Panhandle Butterfly House & Nature Center

The Panhandle Butterfly House & Nature Center connects visitors with Florida’s native butterflies in a setting that doubles as a piece of Milton history. Jack and Fonda Weatherall started it in 1997 in a tent in their Navarre backyard, and it spent about 21 years in Navarre Park before moving to Milton. Its home now is the restored T.W. Jones House, a late-1800s house honoring community pillars Thomas and Alice Jones, which reopened as the center’s education hub in October 2023.

The center is at 4966 Henry St, Milton (phone 850-741-9077, panhandlebutterflyhouse.org), on about 9 acres near the Blackwater River. Its 1,800-square-foot native butterfly vivarium lets visitors watch butterflies through their full life cycle, from caterpillar to adult, typically with around 10 native species inside. The house displays more than 300 mounted butterfly and moth species, and 18 themed gardens and a quarter-mile nature trail along the river extend the visit outdoors.

It is run by Keep Santa Rosa Beautiful, a nonprofit Keep America Beautiful affiliate, with volunteer docents and gardeners, and an Impact100 grant helped fund the vivarium. For the 2026 season it opens Friday and Saturday, 10am to 2pm, or by appointment. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children (as of September 2026), with an optional $10 Monarch Passport Challenge.

School field trips, gardening workshops and conservation talks are offered, and the gift shop stocks locally made goods. Monarch Madness returns October 17, 2026, from noon to 4pm.
