El Matador

El Matador is a gated condominium resort on the Gulf side of Okaloosa Island, the barrier island between Fort Walton Beach and Destin. The complex sits at 909 Santa Rosa Boulevard on about 12 acres of landscaped beachfront, which gives it more open lawn and breathing room than most of the island’s buildings. It dates to the 1970s and is spread across several six-story buildings with enclosed elevator lobbies, holding roughly 317 condominiums in all.

Most units are one-bedroom and two-bedroom layouts, many of them compact, with a mix of Gulf-front and courtyard views. Rental listings run from studios up to larger combined units, so it is worth checking the floor plan and view of a specific unit before booking. Private balconies are standard on the Gulf-facing units.

Shared amenities are a big part of the appeal. The grounds include two large outdoor pools, one of them heated, plus an indoor spa and sauna, a fitness center, tennis and pickleball courts, a basketball court, grilling areas and picnic spots. Security staff manage the gated entrance, and an on-site rental office works out of the property. A ramp leads down to a private stretch of beach, which helps with wagons, strollers and beach carts.

The beach here is part of the long, quieter west end of Okaloosa Island, with white quartz sand and green water just past the dunes. The Okaloosa Island Boardwalk with its restaurants, the Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier and the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park are a short drive east along Santa Rosa Boulevard. The Destin Fort Walton Beach Convention Center is nearby, and Destin Harbor is across the bridge over East Pass. Because the resort sits toward the west end of the developed stretch, sunsets over the undeveloped Eglin land beyond the island’s condos are a regular draw from the beach and upper balconies.

El Matador suits families and groups who want room to spread out, such as lawn space, two pools and courts, in one gated complex. The many smaller units also make it a practical choice for couples and anglers looking for a simple beachfront base. When booking, it helps to confirm which building a unit is in, since walking distances to the pools and beach ramp differ across the grounds. Parking is inside the gate, and the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport is roughly a half-hour drive away, which makes El Matador an easy choice for a long weekend as well as a full week.
