About

3 Sons Bar-B-Q occupies a piece of 30A history. The building at 6931 W County Highway 30A in Dune Allen Beach was, for decades, home to Elmo’s Grill, a seafood house that opened in 1990 as one of the first three restaurants to operate on Scenic Highway 30A. Elmo’s ran on a “not fancy, just famous” motto and was known, among other things, as one of the few restaurants on 30A serving gator ribs. Owner Ellis Woods kept it going for 26 years before selling the business in 2016. When that chapter eventually closed, 3 Sons Bar-B-Q moved into the space, swapping fried Gulf seafood for smoked meat while keeping the same easygoing, family-first feel that made the original spot a fixture.

3 Sons is a family-owned operation established in 2013, and it makes its smoked meats fresh daily using quality hardwood in custom-built smokers. The pit crew works with off-set smokers from Primitive Pits and blends techniques borrowed from Georgia, the Carolinas, Memphis, and Texas into a style the kitchen calls Gulf Coast barbecue: low and slow, with no shortcuts. The board covers the full spread barbecue fans expect, including spare ribs, pulled pork, brisket, smoked sausage, turkey, and chicken, backed up by sides like baked potatoes, salad, and coleslaw, plus gluten-free options for guests who need them. A kids’ menu keeps younger visitors fed with smaller portions of the same smoked favorites, and the restaurant asks for advance notice on any serious food allergies.

That attention to the pit paid off in 2024, when 3 Sons Bar-B-Q was named Best Barbecue in Emerald Coast Magazine’s Best of the Emerald Coast awards, a reader-voted honor covering the entire Northwest Florida coast, not just Walton County. It is the kind of recognition that carries weight in a region full of smokehouses competing for the same weekend crowds heading down 30A.

Beyond the dining room, 3 Sons runs a full catering operation built for everything from small family gatherings to larger events. Medium orders serving 10 to 20 guests need about 24 hours’ notice, while larger orders should be booked roughly 48 hours ahead. Everything is packaged for easy pickup, which makes the restaurant a practical option for vacation rental groups planning a beach-house dinner without cooking. A full bar rounds out the experience for guests who want a cold beer or cocktail alongside their barbecue, and takeout is available for anyone who would rather eat on the beach or back at the condo. The restaurant also sells branded merchandise, including hats and t-shirts, for visitors who want a souvenir of the meal.

Set on Scenic Highway 30A in the heart of Dune Allen Beach, 3 Sons sits within easy reach of the area’s beach accesses and the coastal dune lakes that define this stretch of the coast, making it a convenient stop whether guests are coming off the sand hungry for dinner or picking up a catering order on the way to a rental house. It is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., a long enough window to cover a late lunch, an early dinner, or a takeout run on the way back from the beach. For visitors who want proof that Emerald Coast barbecue can hold its own against the seafood that usually dominates 30A menus, 3 Sons makes the case with every plate.
