Down Island
About
Down Island serves island-inspired Gulf seafood on US-98 in Santa Rosa Beach, with lunch, happy hour, dinner, and a Sunday brunch; the restaurant is closed on Mondays. It is one of the few chef-owned restaurants in the area, run by Chef Brannon Janca and his wife Stefani, who is also a registered dietitian and helps the kitchen accommodate special dietary needs with custom modifications for guests who call ahead.

Janca’s path to Down Island runs through some serious kitchens. He grew up on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, spending childhood summers in his grandfather’s garden and chicken coops, an early education in farm-to-table cooking before that was a marketing term. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of New Orleans, he worked at Gautreau’s and Commander’s Palace, two of that city’s most respected restaurants, before co-founding Stinky’s Fish Camp and later serving as corporate chef for Word of Mouth Restaurant Group. In January 2018, after roughly two decades based in Santa Rosa Beach, Janca decided he needed a change and left that position to build something of his own. He found an old building on Highway 98 and spent years renovating it, alongside Stefani, into what became Down Island.
That history shows up in a menu built around technique rather than excess. Fish, oysters, shrimp, and crab all feature prominently, and the kitchen turns out wood-fired dishes from an Italian brick pizza oven alongside a fresh, chilled raw bar. Most items are made from scratch and can be adjusted for dietary needs, and the menu keeps a set of non-seafood, land lover options and a kids menu for anyone not in the mood for Gulf seafood. The overall approach favors letting good ingredients speak for themselves rather than burying them under heavy preparation, a philosophy that carries through from lunch service into the more elevated dinner menu.

Down Island runs lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday, with a happy hour built into the afternoon lull between the two, and it adds a Sunday brunch service that has become one of the more popular reasons to visit. Friday nights bring late entertainment into the mix as well, extending the evening well past a typical dinner service. The restaurant operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservations or call-ahead seating, so arriving with some flexibility is part of the experience, especially on weekend nights when tables move quickly.
A few house policies are worth knowing before a visit: a $25 corkage fee applies to personal wine bottles brought in, parties of eight or more see an automatic 20 percent gratuity added, and to-go orders carry a small sustainability fee and are only available when there is no wait for dine-in seating. None of that detracts from what Down Island is really selling, a family-run, chef-driven take on Gulf seafood built by people who know the coast personally rather than a chain trying to replicate it. At 2780 US Highway 98, it sits squarely on the main corridor through Santa Rosa Beach, making it an easy stop for visitors staying anywhere along 98 or nearby on 30A. Call (850) 777-3385 for dietary accommodations or large party questions ahead of a visit.
