About

Huck & Harlowe started as a single storefront in Barrett Square and has since grown into one of the better-known pet boutiques on 30A, but the Rosemary Beach shop is still where the whole thing began. Katie and Mason Blackwell met by chance in Inlet Beach in March 2020, and when the pandemic pushed their college classes online, they stayed on 30A rather than heading back to campus. That unplanned stretch of time turned into a relationship, then a business plan, and their first store opened in Rosemary Beach in November 2020, built around a simple idea: dogs deserve gear that is as well designed as anything their owners would buy for themselves.

The Barrett Square shop, at 16 S Barrett Square, Unit C4, carries the outfitter’s core lineup of collars, leashes, bandanas, toys, and treats, along with grooming products and accessories for the humans doing the walking. The bandana program is one of the shop’s signatures: customers can pick from hand-sewn bandanas in five sizes, and the physical stores offer same-day embroidery so a dog can leave wearing a custom piece rather than waiting on a shipped order. Specialty items like Calming Bites, Nose & Paw Balm, and Java Log chew sticks round out a lineup built for dogs that travel with their families rather than staying home during a beach trip.

What began as one shop has expanded into three physical locations along the Emerald Coast: the original Rosemary Beach store, a second location in Seaside, and a third at Grand Boulevard in Miramar Beach, plus a seasonal Bandana Bar pop-up in Seaside’s Pop-up District for custom, same-day embroidery. The brand launched an online store in 2021 and has since shipped more than 75,000 orders to customers well beyond the 30A corridor, a growth curve that caught the pet industry’s attention. Huck & Harlowe was named Pet Product News’ Retailer of the Year in 2023, a notable honor for a company that started with two recent college graduates figuring out retail on the fly.

Visitors can reach the Rosemary Beach store by phone at (850) 848-9808 or shop the full catalog at huckandharlowe.com before or after a visit. Both founders grew up around dogs and describe them as family rather than pets, and that outlook shows up in how the shop is merchandised: less like a big-box pet aisle and more like a small, design-forward boutique that happens to sell dog gear instead of clothing. The Blackwells have been candid about the learning curve of opening a retail business straight out of college, saying they made mistakes and figured out the operational side day by day rather than following a corporate playbook, which gives the brand’s growth story an underdog quality that resonates with a lot of the small-business owners along 30A.

For anyone traveling to Rosemary Beach with a dog in tow, or anyone shopping for a gift for a dog back home, Huck & Harlowe is an easy stop tucked into the same walkable square as the town’s bookstore, clothing shops, and coffee counters. The Unit C4 address puts it close enough to the rest of Barrett Square that a quick errand for a new bandana can turn into a longer browse through several shops in a row. It remains a genuine local success story rooted in a chance meeting during an unusual spring on 30A, and the Rosemary Beach storefront still carries the flagship status among the brand’s now-larger footprint along the coast.
