DeFuniak Springs
Cooperative gallery Local artists Original art

About

The DeFuniak Springs Art Co-Op fills a cooperative gallery space on Baldwin Avenue, sharing its building with Anita’s Half & Half in the middle of the town’s historic downtown. Local Walton County artists run the gallery together, displaying and selling original paintings, crafts, and artwork directly to visitors rather than through an outside dealer. The co-op has represented the area’s working artists for more than a decade, and its members note on their own site that the group exists to support a thriving local art community rather than to operate as a traditional retail gallery.

The range of work on the walls reflects the co-op’s mix of members. Debbie Baker paints butterflies, birds, and blooms alongside local landmarks in acrylics. Julia Campbell Garcia also works in acrylics, focusing on fish, birds, strawberries, and cats. Jan Faubel paints landscapes drawn from the Finger Lakes region, England, and scenes closer to home, while Sue Grimes contributes peaceful landscapes, seascapes, and garden subjects. Jan Hannon is known for bird paintings and detailed miniature work, and Neica Jones, the group’s newest artist, works across still lifes, landscapes, and human-interest pieces.

The co-op is not limited to paintings. Priscilla Mead works primarily in traditional oils, painting landscapes, beaches, and animals, and Michael “Slim” Garcia moves across multiple mediums, including watercolors and graphite portraits. Patti Bean brings a different craft entirely, coiling pine-needle baskets that incorporate natural materials. Beyond those individual styles, the gallery’s overall inventory spans paintings, prints, stained glass, pottery, china, and baskets, so the room rewards a slow walk past every wall and table rather than a quick glance from the doorway.

Beyond the finished pieces for sale, the gallery also stocks art supplies and offers classes, making it as much a resource for working artists as it is a stop for buyers. That combination is part of what sets a member-run co-op apart from a standard gallery: the same artists selling work on the walls are often the ones behind the counter or teaching a class in the back room.

Because the gallery is member-run, the hours vary slightly by day: Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is worth building that schedule into a downtown visit, since the gallery closes earlier or opens later than some travelers expect on any given day. Call 850-419-3007, or reach the co-op by email at dfsartcoop@gmail.com, to confirm hours before a special trip, particularly if you are hoping to meet one of the featured artists in person.

The Baldwin Avenue location makes the Art Co-Op an easy add to a downtown DeFuniak Springs walking route that also includes Anita’s Half & Half next door and the shops and historic buildings surrounding Lake DeFuniak. Original, locally made art travels well as a souvenir, and buying directly from the co-op means the sale supports the working artist rather than a distributor. Because members take turns staffing the gallery, visitors sometimes get the chance to talk directly with the artist behind a painting or basket on display, a level of access that is harder to find at a commercial gallery. Plan on spending twenty minutes or more here; the range of media, from oils and watercolors to pine-needle baskets and stained glass, rewards a slower look around the room rather than a quick pass along one wall.
